My husband and I love riding our e-bikes around town, and now that it’s fall and the summer heat is waning, we’re getting back in the groove.
Where do we like to go?
Sometimes we’ll head to Anza-Borrego Desert State Park in the hope of seeing the bighorn sheep that come down from the canyon.
Other times we’ll head into town to pick up our mail at the post office and see how many people are milling about the local shops and restaurants.
Or we’ll hit the backroads to enjoy the wide open spaces of the state park that surrounds Borrego Springs.
It was during one of these backroad rides, when we headed out at dawn, that we stopped to take a look at what was happening in the fields on either side of us.
We had spotted two coyotes, and I got out my camera to shoot some video for my YouTube channel. The coyotes didn’t seem to care that we were there, and we quickly realized they were after prey. So we stood there silently, watching the hunt unfold.
Their method was intriguing. We watched as the coyotes slowly stalked their prey, heads down and stepping lightly, before suddenly jumping up, pouncing, and digging at the ground. One of the coyotes actually caught the prey, and we watched it gulp it down. The other did not and had to keep hunting.
It was an interesting education on our local wildlife. We had seen plenty of coyotes out here before, but not like this. Here, we had a front-row seat to an actual hunt.
And that wasn’t all. Once I was done filming, we started pedaling down the road again, and to our surprise, we saw that the two coyotes we had been watching weren’t the only ones out hunting. There were coyotes all throughout the fields. We saw probably more than 20 of them scouting for their breakfast.
We were pretty amazed by it all. One more thing that makes living in the desert such a unique adventure.
