With fall arriving, it’s time to dust off our e-bikes, air up the tires, and get to riding around the desert. After a brutally hot summer that kept us from getting out there, my husband and I are ready.
The heat is waning and the mornings are cooler now, and that means my husband and I can easily get in a comfortable ride while watching the sky turn a beautiful burnt orange and yellow as the sun rises.

We can also catch the occasional rabbit or coyote along the way, and give a friendly wave to the other cyclists we pass by.
Or hear the birds talk to each other overhead while the sound of our tires keeps a steady rhythm below us.
And the mountains give the town a dramatic backdrop, while the dried grasses blanket the valley in gold, swaying in the wind.
There are familiar patches of land that are dry and dusty now, but come spring we know they’ll turn green and erupt in a colorful blanket of wildflowers.
Or so we hope, because it all depends on how the weather unfolds in the coming months.

In the meantime, we’ll enjoy the cooler desert air that smells less like hot dust scraping the insides of our throats and lungs, and more like the subtle fragrance of nature’s growth as the desert shifts to fall.
