Under the Borrego Sky

A blog about everyday life in Borrego Springs, California.

After a Long, Hot Summer, Fall Is Finally in Sight

A wide desert landscape with low, rugged mountains beneath a dramatic, heavily clouded sky. Sparse desert vegetation covers the sandy foreground.

We don’t get much rain here in Borrego Springs, California—less than 7 inches a year, according to the Anza-Borrego Foundation. So when the clouds roll in and bring rain with them, we tend to get excited.

Today, Borrego received some light rainfall that came after months of 100+ degree days, and the cool-down was more than welcome. I actually wore pants for the first time in a long time, and it felt wonderful. I could almost feel fall in the air—desert fall, that is.

My husband and I live here full-time and stuck it out through the heat this summer. We both agree it felt like more of a scorcher than last year. There were 26 days over 110 degrees, according to Weather Underground.

With September here, we’re just a couple of weeks away from fall—and the reopening of local businesses that closed up shop for the summer. Soon, the tourists will be back, along with the residents who flew the coop a few months back in search of cooler weather.

I’m more than ready to put the hot summer behind us and enjoy morning walks, bike rides, and spending more time working on my home’s landscaping.

Fall can’t come soon enough.

She wears a blue denim jacket, with dusty desert terrain, rolling hills, and distant mountains unfolding behind her under a bright blue sky filled with wispy white clouds.
