What’s Blooming Now Along Henderson Canyon Road

Yellow wildflowers in Borrego Springs, California.
1–2 minutes

Wildflowers have been quietly blooming along Henderson Canyon Road in Anza-Borrego Desert State Park for several weeks now, dotting the desert floor with color near Borrego Springs.

My husband and I hadn’t been out to see the Henderson Canyon wildflowers in a bit, so we popped on over to take a look. It was encouraging to see the flowers still blooming, and still drawing both locals and tourists.

What’s Blooming Right Now

While this isn’t what you’d call a “super bloom” (at least not just yet), the view is quite impressive. Here’s what we saw:

  • Desert sand verbena (Abronia villosa), spreading low across the desert floor in soft shades of purple
  • Desert sunflowers (Geraea canescens), adding bright yellow pops among the sand and gravel
  • Evening primrose (Oenothera spp.), subtle and easy to miss unless you slow down

Why Henderson Canyon is the Best Wildflower Viewing Spot

Henderson Canyon Road is often one of the first places near Borrego Springs to show early wildflower activity. Its wide, open landscape and sandy soil respond quickly to winter rain, making it a great place to look when other areas of Anza-Borrego Desert State Park aren’t yet in bloom.

Right now, the crowds are small but that could change the closer we get to spring. I’ll keep sharing what I’m seeing throughout the coming weeks.
